Custom Brass Crafts Pricing: How Complexity, Size and Finish Affect Unit Cost

If you have ever requested quotes for custom brass crafts from several suppliers, you know the range can be startling. The same candle holder design might come back at 8 dollars from one factory and 20 from another. The gap is not random. Three factors drive most of it: complexity, size, and finish.

Complexity starts with the casting method. A simple cylindrical shape can be machined from brass bar stock with minimal setup. A figure with deep undercuts or fine relief work needs lost-wax casting, which means a mold, a wax injection step, and far more labor per piece. Every surface that needs hand-polishing adds time. A design that needs 15 minutes of polishing per unit costs several times more to finish than one that needs three.

Size works differently than most buyers expect. Brass is priced partly by weight, so bigger items carry more material cost. But the relationship is not linear. A large casting cools slower, has a higher risk of porosity, and requires heavier finishing equipment. A small but intricate piece can cost more than a large simple one, because complexity, not size, drives the labor hours.

Finish is the third lever. Raw sandblasted brass is the cheapest option. Mirror polishing and brushed satin both add labor. Antique or aged finishes involve chemical treatment and hand-rubbing, which takes skill and time. PVD coating in colors like gold or black adds both a coating cost and a batch setup cost, so it makes sense only at reasonable quantities.

Two more costs hide behind the unit price. Tooling for lost-wax casting runs several hundred dollars per design, usually amortized into the order. If your quantity is small, the tooling share per piece can approach the production cost itself. Gift packaging for corporate items is another line that surprises first-time buyers.

When comparing quotes from different factories, compare what is inside them. One factory may quote machined brass where another quotes cast. One may include three-stage polishing where another does a quick buff. The cheapest quote is usually the one with the most steps removed.
